What We Do

The Greenlee Chapter, NSDAR, is dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children.

Promoting Patriotism

  • Celebrate patriotic events and anniversaries
  • Collect and assemble information for the Greenlee Chapter, NSDAR, Patriot Ancestor Book Vol. 2
  • Collect canceled stamps for veterans’ projects
  • Collect and mail coupons to overseas personnel to help with savings at the base exchange stores and commissaries
  • Collect used printer ink cartridges to raise funds for Crossnore Communities for Children
  • Participate in DAR’s National Day of Service
  • Participate in patriotic parades such as Independence Day and Veterans Day
  • Participate in U.S. Flag retirement ceremonies
  • Send cards and notes to active-duty service personnel
  • Support the local Veterans Restoration Quarters in Asheville, North Carolina
  • Support Wreaths Across America and participates in wreath-laying ceremonies
  • Supply various comfort items for patients at George Charles Veteran’s Administration (VA) Medical Center

Members are delighted to sponsor events to honor the patriotic service of our veterans and to celebrate anniversaries such as the 100th anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The Greenlee Chapter, NSDAR, honors veterans by participating in Wreaths Across America. Wreaths are purchased and laid on veterans’ graves at a veteran or local cemetery.

For the National DAR Day of Service, members fill baskets with snacks and goodies while distributing them to various staff members at local nursing facilities to thank them for their dedication.

Historic Preservation

  • Mark graves of local American Revolutionary War Patriots
  • Support the National Society for the preservation of NSDAR buildings
  • Participate in local historic programs, tours, and events

Greenlee Chapter, NSDAR, members visited the Berry site in Morganton, North Carolina. Archeologists believe they have discovered Fort San Juan, North Carolina’s first real colony built in 1567. Our chapter is committed to historical preservation.

The Greenlee Chapter, NSDAR, joined the Quaker Meadows Chapter, NSDAR, at the Quaker Meadows Cemetery to dedicate a new memorial monument installed to honor ten American Revolutionary War patriots, including James Greenlee and his sister, Grace Greenlee McDowell.

The chapter marks graves of local American Revolutionary War 
patriots such as Captain Thomas  Hemphill who is buried at Ebenezer Church Cemetery in Old Fort, McDowell County, North Carolina.

Education

  • Collect funds to give in support of Crossnore Communities for Children
  • Deliver Christmas gifts to the children at Crossnore Communities for Children
  • Donate items to the Crossnore Birdcage, which is the storage and store area where cottage parents can take children to get what they need
  • Participate in the American History Book Club for chapter members
  • Present Constitution Week programs in elementary schools with members dressed in colonial costumes
  • Present genealogy workshops and programs
  • Sponsor American History Essay Contests for fifth to eighth grade students
  • Sponsor DAR Good Citizens Essays for high school seniors
  • Sponsor Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) Awards to cadets in high schools

Members are enthusiastic about promoting education and teaching others about history. Genealogy presentations for the public as well as for chapter programs are held by Greenlee Chapter, NSDAR, volunteer genealogists.

 The Greenlee Chapter, NSDAR, sponsors the Grace Greenlee McDowell Society of the Children of the American Revolution. Our mission is to train young people to be good citizens, to develop good leaders, and to promote love of country and its heritage.

Our chapter members enjoy hearing guest speakers share about our local history during the American Revolutionary War period at our monthly meetings. Speakers include authors, historians, and community leaders.
